Your llms.txt file
Place the file at the root of the site: https://yoursite.com/llms.txt.
What is an llms.txt file?
llms.txt is a Markdown text file placed at the root of a site. It summarizes the site and lists its most useful pages so an assistant or agent can quickly understand what it is for and where to read. It is a proposed standard (llmstxt.org), not an enforced rule.
To be clear: no engine guarantees it reads the file, and Google has publicly said it does not use it for ranking. It takes a few minutes and carries no risk: publish it as a complement, not as your main lever.
How to use it
- Title and summary: the site name, then one clear sentence on what it does and for whom.
- Key pages: five to fifteen pages a hurried reader should read, with a short description each.
- Other resources: what can be skipped when context is short (blog, archives).
- Publishing: save the file as
llms.txtat the root, then check it opens at/llms.txt.
Frequently asked questions
What is an llms.txt file for?
It gives assistants and agents a summary of your site and a list of useful pages in a simple format. It does not replace the sitemap or robots.txt and does not control what is indexed.
Does llms.txt improve my Google ranking?
No. Google has said it does not use it. The value is elsewhere: making your site easier to read for tools that choose to consult it. To be cited in assistant answers, clear, precise, sourced content remains the most effective.
Do I need an llms-full.txt?
The format includes a variant with the full text of pages. It is only useful for technical documentation. For a showcase site or blog, llms.txt alone is enough.
Where do I place the file?
At the root of the site, at /llms.txt, with the same access as your home page. It can be listed in robots.txt like any resource, but that is not required.
Is my data sent anywhere?
No. The file is built in your browser; nothing is sent to our servers.
